In Ayurveda, we look at a persons body/mind makeup through the doshas. The doshas are called VATA (air), PITTA (fire and water) and KAPHA (earth and water) and each one has unique qualities. When the dosha is balanced we feel healthy. When there is an imbalance, illness can occur. I started looking at my dosha three years ago in a yoga class when the teacher handed me a photocopy of a dosha test. At the time I had no idea what it was, but I took the test home and began to answer the questions. My results were a PITTA/VATA constitution. As I started to read more about the doshas, it made perfect sense to me and the description of my results were EXACT! Here is a description of my doshas:
I am combination PITTA/VATA, but PITTA is the dominant dosha. PITTA types have a medium build. It is PITTA to want things to be in order, to pay attention to details and not have time wasted. PITTA is driven by learning, gathering facts and then sharing knowledge with anyone who will listen. PITTA tends to be a workaholic and if out of balance can be critical. PITTA tends to have inflammation and high blood pressure. Always thinking, fire always burning inside. Can become irritable, skin can get red with anger and often breaks out. My VATA make-up goes like this. It is VATA to always be on the move, walk fast and talk fast. VATA is creative and enterprising. When out of balance, which happens easily for VATA, they can experience anxiety, aches and pains and fear.
**Those of you who know me well, know that this combination fits me to a "T"!
So what did taking the test do for me? Well, it helped me to really understand that I can be out of balance a lot and that my make-up is really important when determining how to balance my life and my health. Everything from the food I eat to the exercise I should be doing. For example: You don't want to put more of what you already have in your body/mind. PITTA is fire, so I should stay away from salt, spicy foods and extremely hot exercise. I am always on fire on the inside, so HOT YOGA is not going to be for me. It is recommended that is eat cooling foods, raw vegetables and the exercise I do should not be over strenuous. I should walk, not run. I should do more restorative poses vs. Vinyasa Flow.
I have taken a handful of dosha tests all with the same results. And I share this with you now because it has really helped me to understand how I can heal and balance myself. If you are in constant pain and have no idea why or if you have no energy, can't sleep 8 hours straight or have some emotional sadness, learning about your dosha would be the first step in the process of feeling better!
This is really just a small look into the doshas and I share my information so you can see a bit about the science behind it as an example.
If you would like to take a dosha test, there are many online. Here are two that I believe are detailed and intensive.
In my next post we will take a look at each dosha further and what it means when they are out of balance.
